Customer FAQs
Weight and Measures & Cubic Weight
Q: The parcel I sent to Sydney only weighed 8 kilograms, but I was charged for 11 kilograms. How come?
A: Z Transport Group, like other freight companies, takes into account both the mass (weight on the scales) of a parcel and a calculated weight determined by the parcel's size. Whichever weight is heavier is used to calculate the charges.
The calculated weight is sometimes known as "cubic weight". The volume of a parcel (carton, box, package, etc) is worked out by multiplying width by height by length. The volume is then multiplied by a "cubic factor" to derive the calculated weight.
The "cubic factor" applied is usually worked out by saying that a parcel 1 metre high by 1 metre wide by 1 metre long will, on average, weigh 250 kilograms. Other factors may be used in some cases by different freight carriers.
Obviously, a cubic metre of lead weighs a lot more than a cubic metre of feathers! However a parcel containing a set of wine glasses, for example, would include a lot of padding to avoid breakage. It might only weigh 2 kilograms on the scales but could be a large parcel. For interstate freight especially, the volume (space taken up) is an important consideration.
You can use the calculator at right to work out the billable weight. Click the [Example] button to see an example calculation (weight on scales = 13kg, cubic weight = 15kg, charged weight = 15kg.
You can use your own values: Just click the [Reset] button to clear the form, enter your values and click [Calculate] to see the result.
